5th SLanguages Annual Symposium
*******************************
16-18 September 2011
Friday to Sunday
#slang11
The 5th SLanguages Annual Symposium is a FREE annual conference which focuses on language learning in a virtual world(s) founded by Gavin Dudeney of The Consultants-E. Today it is organised by a team of volunteers.
The featured theme of this year’s 3-day online conference is 'Serious games' and 'Situated Learning'.
It hosts around 50 guest speakers and is attended by approx. 500 participants/ avatars. It takes place in Second Life on EduNation and on AVALON Learning and includes tours to other virtual worlds.
To attend the sessions in Second Life, you need to have an avatar, a 3D representation, which is free. To get an avatar you need to sign up at secondlife.com.
All of the program will be streamed in Adobe ConnectPro, which is a webconferencing software which allows us to screenshare our desktops, almost like a virtual window to a virtual world. You do not need to have an avatar to attend a session in Adobe and you can watch and listen to the keynotes, panel discussions, plenaries, presentations, workshops, tours to educational sims, demo language lessons, theatre plays, dance performances, variety shows and even the party all from the comfort of an Adobe ConnectPro seat (max 100).

Comment by Graham Stanley on September 16, 2011 at 13:14 Well done for getting this all organised - just spotted a mistake in the Google doc - many of the sessions are advertised as 'Friday 17th' rather than 'Saturday 17th' - a minor point, but might cause some confusion for somebody.
See you later!

Comment by Heike Philp aka Gwen Gwasi on September 13, 2011 at 15:23 Hi Erika,
Let me know your SL name, then I can add you as friend and teleport you to where things are about to start on Friday.
Or try to search for my name and add me as friend, great exercise. :-)

Comment by Erika - Limiaber on September 13, 2011 at 14:30 Hello Heike,
I am really grateful for all the information, as this is the 5th session, I probably should say: where have I been all this time? and the truth is, this is really all new for me and I find it amazing. I was waiting for this conference since I sign up for SL just a few weeks ago, so sure I will be there. See you in-world and thank you again.
:D
Comment by Heike Philp aka Gwen Gwasi on September 12, 2011 at 22:31 Hi Erika,
We will be publishing those links on each scheduled event.
Sometimes there will be up to 4 parallel sessions and each of them will have a different Adobe ConnectPro room and you will find each link mentioned there.
Also of course the SLURL. Right now we are also still waiting for a temporary conference island to finalize all of the SLURLs. It is a bit difficult to manage on such a short notice but our previous idea of having the sky conference plattform cross both our islands didnt work out because sound does not travel across to another sim in case of different ownership.
Hence, we ordered a temporary island - HOPING very much, that sound will work.
Looking forward to you attending!

Comment by Helen Myers aka Karelia Kondor on September 5, 2011 at 6:43 Thanks to Heike for all this coordinating .. I'm really looking forward to the event!
In the middle of serious games in situated learning, please make sure you make time for some serious partying on Saturday 17th September 1.30-4.30 SLT. The ever-resourceful, imaginative and artistic Mary Roussel is building a lovely scene for us where we can socialise (humouring me by giving it a 'pink' theme ... we're calling it 'Planet Pink' in the spirit of Randall's 'Club Jupiter' and it will be available for any of you to use as a holodeck scene with your groups later!).
There are three ways in which anyone can help us:
(1) We'd like to have some 'freebie' boxes available .. so if you have any copy/mod teaching tools, party clothes or party fun gadgets to liven up any party, please pass them to Karelia Kondor and she's add them to the boxes!
(2) Also, if you'd like to help out on the 'greeting/welcoming' aspect, let me/Karelia know!
(3) Let's make the music international, loud and singalong. Please pass me/Karelia any requests!
Thanks!
(and one day I may write a sentence without any exclamation marks .. you never know!)
