The Business Talking Research Blog

When the Business Talking course was under preparation at what was then called Högskolan i Kalmar, a Ph.D. student called Alexandra Petrakou wanted to look at the process of creating and delivering a course in SL for a paper she was writing. Her focus then was on the role of the teacher, so she was very interested in everything that was going on in my head as I designed and delivered the first course (it was called 'Oral Production' in those days, btw). It all got quite exciting, with a video… Continue

Bryan Carter in Umeå, Sweden today

Bryan Carter (whom I've worked with on my courses in Second Life, and who is also one of the participants in the instructional films we made) is in Umeå, Sweden this week. He led an interesting seminar this afternoon on the subject of "Presence, Representation and Identity in Virtual Spaces".

You can watch the recording at this address:…

Lots of Applicants to the Business Talking Course in SL from Kalmar

We've just had the application figures for the autumn term 2010. We've had 231 applicants so far!

Some of these will disappear before course start in September, but we're also likely to attract some exchange students (we've got about 15 of these this term). However, 231 applicants would usually result in about 120 starters.

I'm not quite sure how we're going to handle all these students … but we'll think of something!

Business Talking (not an Avalon course) underway from Kalmar

I've just had an intensive week getting 19 students going on the Business Talking course from Kalmar in Kalmar. The student group is heterogeneous - to say the least. None of the Swedes actually live in Kalmar and most of them don't even live in Sweden, whilst the ones who are here IRL are Russian, Koreans, French, Austrian and Chinese exchange students.

We started the usual way with a sort of cocktail party on Kamimo Island, where students from the University of Central Missouri (Dr… Continue

Thank you so much, Prof. Richardson. I am currently doing my pilot study now for my dissertation. I'd love to discuss it with you either in SL or RL via video conferencing...

Best,

Hi David,
I'm a librarian at the University of Manchester and I'm researching foreign language learning in SL and its implications for resource provision in academic libraries. I am doing this work as an Arcadia Fellow at Cambridge University Library. I would like to interview people who are actively involved in foreign language learning in SL (both students and teachers) and, preferably, who also have experience of using academic libraries as part of their foreign language learning. However, I would still like to hear from you even if you only fit into one of these two target groups. I imagine the interview won't be longer than approx. 30 min. I would be very grateful if you would be willing to participate. The interviews will take place in SL (or via Skype) over the next 3 weeks (until early June). Please send me a message and we can arrange a convenient date and time. You are very welcome to pass this message on to relevant colleagues. Many thanks!
Stefanie.

Hi David, great to see you. May I ask, do you happen to have a picture with your Avatar rather than a real photo? I wish we could upload two pictures ... like in facebook.

And I have now changed my name to Heike Philp aka Gwen Gwasi.

Thanks for signing-up. This is great
