What is your professional background?
I am a language trainer with an MA in Educational Technology and TESOL and the Diploma in English language teaching to Adults from the Cambridge University (DELTA).

I teach EAP (English for Academic Purposes) at at tertiary level in Turkey and the UK. I have worked as a language trainer in different countries for ten years and have taught general, business, technical and academic English at different levels to students of all ages and backgrounds.
My main interests are developing and teaching ESP courses, appropriate use of educational technology in language learning and teaching, learner motivation, and learner autonomy.
I participated in the one-year postgraduate programme MUVEnation ‘Teaching and learning with MUVEs’ funded by the EU. I am also involved in training teachers how to use Virtual Worlds, specifically Second Life, for language teaching.
I started a group for language teachers in Second Life together with two colleagues. We have over 100 members now. The SLExperiments group meets twice a month in-world. We also have a wiki where we share resources related to education in virtual worlds, especially related to language teaching. The group joined forces with AVALON in 2011 and has a discussion forum on this Ning.

Reading Skills in the Virtual World

The company 3Dsoft seems to have developed a tool similar to SLOODLE called LearningSpaces Maker.

In this video, they show a reading skills activity.

I think the video is self-explanatory.

Luisa's interview on ABC Radio National Australia

This is an excellent radio interview with Luisa on ABC Radio on 31 March 2011. I thought it would be a pity if it got lost in the event archives, so I'm copying it here. This was the original announcement:

Luisa has recently been interviewed by award winning Australian journalist and broadcaster, Antony Funnell. Her interview goes to air on Future…

New BASIC mode in SL Viewer 2

Some of you might already have read about it in the SL Educators forum. The latest version of the SL Viewer 2 has now also a BASIC mode that you can select. In fact, this is the default viewer and mode for all who sign up for a Second Life account now. Although the intension of simplifying the first steps for new SL residents is good, this brings some problems with it for educators. Before, I list some of the differences between the basic and advanced viewer, I thought it might be helpful to…

How Second Life can motivate English language students

No, this is not about a lesson in Second Life :-) Read on.

Now that Second Life is accessible to 16 - 17 year olds, I have talked about it with my high-school students who are training to become aviation maintenance technicians. I had written a blog post about it here.

As I cannot use SL in class with them, I thought they might just as well do that in their own time. Some have…

SL+MOODLE=SLOODLE Some example projects

A colleague on my MA course asked about SLOODLE. I thought I'll post my answer here, too as many language teachers ask about this tool.

I have always used Second Life in combination with MOODLE and so have many other teachers or teacher educators. So, SLOODLE, which connects Second Life to MOODLE, looked interesting when I came across it and I installed and set it up on my MOODLE. We also used it regularly in a…

Hey Nergiz, great to see you here, too! To be honest, I don't have a solid idea yet, but I'm thinking about something like "interculturality" in language education or the status of World Englishes in virtual networks. I still have another year of courses ahead of me, so I'm kinda taking my time :D Cheers!

Hi Nergiz - just a quick note to let you know that the link to your blog on the AVALON Moodle home page, in the right-hand column, shows me a Snipurl error - for some reason. I also get a 404 Not Found error with the Educational Uses of SL link, in the same column.
Everything else works just fine - I just thought I'd let you know :)

Salam Nergiz,

Good to see you here as well. I look forward to more SL engagement after I am done with my MA which was taking most of my time. I would love to try it soon with my students, if possible!!

Best wishes,

Hi Nergiz,
This is a slightly revised version of the one I sent to you via SL:
I'm a librarian at the University of Manchester and I'm researching foreign language learning in SL and its implications for resource provision in academic libraries. I am doing this work as an Arcadia Fellow at Cambridge University Library. I would like to interview people who are actively involved in foreign language learning in SL (both students and teachers) and, preferably, who also have experience of using academic libraries as part of their foreign language learning. However, I would still like to hear from you even if you only fit into one of these two target groups. I imagine the interview won't be longer than approx. 30 min. I would be very grateful if you would be willing to participate. The interviews will take place in SL (or via Skype) over the next 3 weeks (until early June). Please send me a message and we can arrange a convenient date and time. You are very welcome to pass this message on to relevant colleagues. Many thanks!
Stefanie.
