I am a language teacher. I've taught English as a foreign language for over 15 years mainly in Brazil but also in the UK and now for the past 3 years I've been teaching Portuguese as a foreign language at Birmingham University in the UK. I have been involved in several projects on new technologies and language teaching and I have co-edited a couple of books "Handbook of Research on E-Learning Methodologies for Language Acquisition" (2009) and "Handbook of Research on Collaborative Learning using Concept Mapping" (2010). I haven't had any experience in teaching in SL yet, but I believe the future of language teaching to be in learning in virtual worlds for the possibility of not only developing projects and working collaborative in 3D but also for allowing opportunities for students to engage in informal / unplanned / spontaneous interaction with (native) speakers of L2 and continue learning for themselves when the course is over. I look forward to learning, collaborating and meeting you all in the course!
