Sounds good, Klaus. Have you seen the rooms in the EUROCALL HQ and in our holodecks where an additional chair is automatically added when all the existing chairs are occupied? It's done by means of a script. It's great for classes and meetings whe...

Hi Graham, what we intend to do is to integrate the holodeck with the LMS. If teacher & students show up to class "everything is already there". Everything else is tentative. The teacher has the option to modify the scenario (e.g. adding an addit...

Creating holodeck scenarios for specific language teaching/learning situations is a topic that we have discussed with some teachers who are members of the EUROCALL/CALICO Virtual Worlds SIG. We would not expect most teachers to master the art of c...

Hi, here short machinima of the features of the holodeck we did for the AVALON project, as we have presented for the team today. We will post an hands-on session for all who want to check it out for themselves soon. (First priority is to do the m...

Dear Klaus, This is good news! Would love to know more and see it work. Will contact you after EuroCALL conference. Cheers Ton

Actually a holodeck will be part of what we are creating in WP4. It is more technically named as "publishing process" because contents from different sources will be incorporated. A first prototype is ready and we are planning to test them in cla...

So far I have not bothered to learn how to create a new holodeck scenario from scratch. I have, however, bought several for the holodeck on the EUROCALL HQ roof, and I have learned how to use the Builder's Buddy packaging tool - which is a bit lik...

I think you have to know the environment that you work in in order to be able to make informed decisions about the best way to do something. In a RL school, you would also check out what kind of equipment they have and find out what they are good ...

Yes, but I'm still not at all clear what the "good reasons" are. I can see that holodeck scenes are something that some people might find useful from time to time, but I would hardly consider it a core skill. I think that there are far more immed...

In answer as to whether "..it is educationally efficient to actually expect student language teachers (one of the NIFLAR target groups) to invest time in acquiring the technical skills needed to productively use this tool (e.g. for designing a set...

If you see holodecks primarily as portable class space or role-play scene, I can partly agree with Pete. It is possible to go to places in SL to do role-plays and you can buy ready-made scenes for holodecks created by professional builders. But t...

I am not a big fan of holdecks, although I am definitely open to persuasion. I can see their value as temporary/portable builds but I think the amount of time an effort that is required to create a high quality scene is not worth the effort. I ima...

Sharing 3D project experiences

My earlier MOO research and experiences led to my interest, not to say fascination, with 3D for LL. It motivated me to join the experimental activities at LanguageLab, before they opened their doors in 2007. See a brief impression of what we did here . It was a most inspriring experience, we had great fun and learned a lot! It was also the start of my avatar network thanks to which I am happy to have come to know some of you.
And all that led, I am sure, to the project ViTAAL and my involvement in, what I hope to consider, the AVALON partner project NIFLAR.
Looking forward to collaborating with you!
Ton
PS It so happens that WP2 in NIFLAR is also concerned with task and activity development and related 3d world functionalities

Hi Ton, I got an email from you off here but now I don't know how to respond and cant find it ;-)

Anyway, unfortunately the Italian course is over. We are currently writing up the course in a closed wiki. It will be made public as soon as it is ready (hopefully by end of August) and then people are free to do what they want with it.

However, if you would like to know more about it, I would be more than happy to talk to you in skype or meet in Second Life.

I look forward to hearing from you,

Luisa

Dear Ton,
I'm a librarian at the University of Manchester and I'm researching foreign language learning in SL and its implications for resource provision in academic libraries. I am doing this work as an Arcadia Fellow at Cambridge University Library. I would like to interview people who are actively involved in foreign language learning in SL (both students and teachers) and, preferably, who also have experience of using academic libraries as part of their foreign language learning. However, I would still like to hear from you even if you only fit into one of these two target groups. I imagine the interview won't be longer than approx. 30 min. I would be very grateful if you would be willing to participate. The interviews will take place in SL (or via Skype) over the next 3 weeks (until early June). Please send me a message and we can arrange a convenient date and time. You are very welcome to pass this message on to relevant colleagues. Many thanks!
Stefanie.

Ton,

Hi it is Luisa here from AVALOn. Just a very quick question. Did you use the Teen second life grid for your vitaal project?

Thanks.

Hi Heike,
Will pass your ideas on to the coordinator. I am sure we can do these things (reciprocal membership and presentations). One of the differences between our projects is that in NIFLAR the 3d focus is only a part in which 3 partners are involved.

Being responsible for 3d word development I hope to explore collaboration or even a joint initiative. IMO, it might be practical and also interesting from a budget and sustainability point of view.
Ciao Ton

Hi Ton,

This is soooo great to have you sign up on this site. May I ask whether we can equally sign up on niflar.eu?

Your project is of real interest to us and if I may, can we invite you to give us a little overview of Niflar at an in-world meeting?
